HBO shows have always stood out as the cream of the crop when it comes to premiere network shows. The new series VICE is helping HBO push the envelope even further with it’s hard-hitting investigative news/documentary format. Last week’s episode featured a look into China’s problems now that men outnumber women so greatly, and also takes a look at how youth in Greece and Spain are responding to the financial crisis in the reason.

While that’s all fine and dandy, we of course wouldn’t be mentioning this if the show didn’t feature some great music, and last week’s episode made sure of that by starting the episode off with “Unconsolable” by Ambassadors. The song’s mix of blues, soul, electro and modern indie pop is the perfect starting point if you’ve never heard of these up-and-comers from Brooklyn.

Major Lazer is one of those names that we’ve heard a lot about over the years, but embarrassingly (especially since we’re such big Diplo fans - for those of you who don’t know, Major Lazer is another one of Diplo’s projects), have never taken the time to check out.

Well, a new promo ad for the new HBO series VICE which also features a brand new song from Major Lazer (featuring Shaggy) called ”Keep Cool” has seriously got our attention, meaning we are running to check out the rest of his back catalog.  Check out the video clip above!

Mark Ronson’s infectious “Bang, Bang, Bang” introduced us to MNDR, so that alone makes it an all-time favorite. The guest vocals that the brash diva provides, as well as additional help from Q-Tip really push this over the edge as the best Mark Ronson jam, and we’re obviously not the only people who think that, as the song has been featured in countless shows, movies and ads.  No offense, Samantha, but Mark is the most talented family member - by far

The latest commercial to use the song is HBO, in promotion of their HBO Go service. While we’d still like to see them add HBOGo to the PS3, it is a pretty awesome service outside of that minor caveat, and this is another great use of this adrenaline-pumping song.

The last few years of music have given us a whole new wave of divas with attitude that have been making music that boldly blends many genres such as hip hop, electro, dub-step, R&B and more.  Brash ladies like MNDR, Amanda Blank, Azealia Banks Ke$ha, and Kreayshawn continue to push boundary musical boundaries while also pushing each other to step their games up, and perhaps no track exemplifies this better than Kreayshawn’s “Bumpin Bumpin.”

The hard-hitting track was also just featured in the most recent episode of HBO’s Girls, “Bad Friend,” which HBO GO subscribers can watch by clicking the picture above. The song plays while Elijah and Hannah have an argument in a bathroom at a club.

HBO’s Girls is probably the most talked-about new show on TV, and with good reason - it’s been billed as a Sex and the City featuring 20-somethings, and has definitely lived up to those lofty expectations.

We were already fans of the show, but just became even bigger fans after they used “Infinity Guitars” by Sleigh Bells twice in the latest episode, “Hard Being Easy.”  The song first plays over the title card for the show and, then while Marnie heads to the coffee shop to talk to Ray, and it was great to hear a track from their raucous debut again after basically having the new album on repeat for the past few months. Inception was by far our favorite movie of last year, and in case you missed it (or just want to see it again for the second, third, or thirtieth time), HBO is going to be showing it. We caught a promo ad for it the other night right after the Gaga show, and were equally excited that they used Junip’s “Without You” as background music.

The song’s slow-burning surreal vibe fits perfect with the spot, and the movie as a whole. Check it out above.
