Have you seen The CW’s new show Cult? If you haven’t, you really ought to check out this new mystery/horror/thriller/drama, whcih stars Matthew Davis and Jessica Lucas. The show (obviously) has a much darker tone than most CW shows, even the CW shows with somewhat ‘dark’ premises.  Based on the pilot, which you can stream on CW’s website by clicking the image above, this show is going to keep you on pins and needles at all times.  Of course, we wouldn’t be writing about this show for our site if it didn’t have a great music tie-in, and they couldn’t have picked a better way to start off impressing us than by using music from Jose Gonzalez. In this case, the haunting/hypnotic song”White Rain” by Gonzalez’s band Junip plays while Nate think that he has discovered something and Merriam is concerned.  Junip on Facebook | Last.fm Zoom

Is there anything more pleasant than the calm, smokey finger-picked acoustic guitar stylings of Junip’s Jose Gonzalez?  Do we need to even ask this question? 

To back our argument, we’d like to submit the evidence above - Junip’s “To the Grain,” which plays in a new GE ad that also features an inspiring story of how their heart-monitoring technology is allowing kids with heart conditions to continue to participate in sports and other physical activity that they otherwise would not be able to.

Did you catch Jimmy Kimmel Live last night? We did, both in person and on TV (fyi, the show isn’t taped “Live” anymore, so that’s how we were able to attend in person and then catch it on TV)

Why did we go, you ask? Well, besides the fact that going to TV show tapings is always a fun LA-distraction, we also knew that Junip would be performing, and we have the breathtaking rendition of “Always” here for you to enjoy. Can’t wait until we start hearing this great tune used in our favorite TV shows and movies, just like “Without You.”

Junip’s “Without You” has deservedly been featured time and time again in TV shows, promos, video games, etc - the song’s haunting cinematic flair makes it a a great choice to use at just about any time. However, “Without You” is not the only song that Junip frontman Jose Gonzalez has written that can really set the mood, and if you saw this past week’s episode of Parenthood “Forced Family Fun” then you know what we mean.

Parenthood wisely chose to use “Official” in a transition between the scene where Julia mishandles the sushi thing with Zoe and then Zeek and Adam talking about Sarah.

Bored To Death is back, and if you haven’t watched the first two seasons of this excellent HBO comedy, you’re missing out. We missed out on season 1, but after season last season’s first episode, went back and watched the whole first season in two days. Featuring a comedy trifecta of Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galifianakis, and Ted Danson, this show’s offbeat wit is instantly addictive.

Beyond our initial excitement at the show being back, we were also thrilled to hear Junip’s “Howl” at the beginning of the second half of the two-part season opener…check out the scene above for a taste of Junip’s music, and a great example of the ridiculous situations this show constantly puts its characters in.

Junip’s haunting track “Without You” has the most dramatic and cinematic feel of any song we can remember in recent history, so it’s fitting that it is often used - remember the Inception HBO trailer?

The Nine Lives of Chloe King chose to send off the show with this Jose Gonzalez epic, and we have the clip for you.

Finally saw Crazy, Stupid, Love and although it didn’t offer any real surprises, the movie was definitely a solidly enjoyable mix of romance, comedy and drama.

The movie also featured some great tunes, starting with The Acorn and their song “Almanac” (which also appears on the official soundtrack). The song plays when they’re in Weaver’s SUV at Jessica’s house when Cal’s struggle to understand stops Jessica’s attempt to let him know how she feels.

“Loops” by Junip isn’t in the official soundtrack (how does that get decided anyway? That’s always puzzled us) but it does have a memorable use in the film, as it plays when Robbie declares his love for all to see; Jessica tells him there’s someone else.

Inception was by far our favorite movie of last year, and in case you missed it (or just want to see it again for the second, third, or thirtieth time), HBO is going to be showing it. We caught a promo ad for it the other night right after the Gaga show, and were equally excited that they used Junip’s “Without You” as background music. 

The song’s slow-burning surreal vibe fits perfect with the spot, and the movie as a whole. Check it out above.

Parenthood has shared our enthusiasm for Jose Gonzalez’s band Junip all season, and last night we were happy to see that they dipped back into that same rich well again, using “Loops” during the scene after prom when Amber tells Sarah that she isn’t going to live her life for her anymore (i.e. going to college and being a good student, taking her advice on everything) because it’s not working out.

LA people know that Banksy has recently graced us with his presence, which of course is making us all pay more attention to the graffiti around the city of angels as of late, which makes us super eager to see A Love Letter For You, which is an upcoming documentary that focuses on the allure of graffiti. Check out the trailer above, which also features the propulsive, yet mildly-haunting, “Howl” by Junip. “Howl” is yet another fantastic tune from Jose Gonzalez, whose songwriting has been absolutely on fire for the last few years.
