Junip’s “Without You” has deservedly been featured time and time again in TV shows, promos, video games, etc - the song’s haunting cinematic flair makes it a a great choice to use at just about any time. However, “Without You” is not the only song that Junip frontman Jose Gonzalez has written that can really set the mood, and if you saw this past week’s episode of Parenthood “Forced Family Fun” then you know what we mean.

Parenthood wisely chose to use “Official” in a transition between the scene where Julia mishandles the sushi thing with Zoe and then Zeek and Adam talking about Sarah.

Parenthood has shared our enthusiasm for Jose Gonzalez’s band Junip all season, and last night we were happy to see that they dipped back into that same rich well again, using “Loops” during the scene after prom when Amber tells Sarah that she isn’t going to live her life for her anymore (i.e. going to college and being a good student, taking her advice on everything) because it’s not working out.

The soothing tones of Jose Gonzalez’s Junip project have been a great match for Parenthood in the past, and they dipped back into that rich well again this week, using “Without You” as a backdrop when Jasmine calls Julia to tell her that she still wants to have the sleepover.

Jose Gonzalez is a man who can do no wrong around these parts. His spine-chilling performance at the Spike Video Game Awards was far and away the highlight of the inaugural edition of that show, and now Gonzalez’s other project, the band Junip, has been featured in the latest episode of Parenthood. The poignant slow-burning song “At the Doors” plays while Adam invites Alex to join them for dinner, and has some of the best elements of Wilco, Stereolab, and Yo La Tengo all in one.

This is the second time this season that Parenthood has found use for Junip’s work, as the song “Don’t Let It Pass” was previously featured (of course, you loyal readers already know that :P )

When we first heard of NBC’s idea to turn the 1989 classic Steve Martin film Parenthood into a TV show, we were skeptical - after all, how can you make an entire season out of this concept? Well, thanks to some sharp writing and an ensemble of characters, Parenthood has been extremely successful, while also being enjoyable.

This week’s episode, “Seven Names” continues with their excellent balance of drama and comedy, while also throwing in a particular tasty song - “Don’t Let It Pass” by Junip. Jose Gonzalez’s band is chalk full of easy-flowing tunes like this, and it provides a nice backdrop to the transition between scenes as Julia and Joel are fighting about work schedules, and then Amber tells Sarah that Kelsey’s mom still think she’s the problem.
