Shameless has so much good music that if we had more free time on our hands, we could run an entire site just dedicated to the music in this show alone. Since we don’t, we just like to bring you our favorite highlights each week, and this week’s episode “Civil Wrongs” features three songs that stand out in particular.

First is a song by 1985, a band we were introduced to by a recent Pizza Hut ad. Their song “A Beautiful Life” which features beautiful layered harmonies and rollicking rhythms, plays when Veronica announces that she and Kev are having a baby.

Long-time indie stalwarts Middle Distance Runner have their track “Firehouse” play when Fiona’s new friend at work invites her to lunch.

Last, Fellow Bohemian, an upcoming artist we were introduced to by Shameless last season, have another song in the show. The LA-based indie popsters’ new track “It Takes So Little” plays when Ian tells Lip about Mickie’s girlfriend.

All three bands feature a common sonic thread of great vocal harmonies, jangly guitars, and rolling drums, and it’s nice to see how bands like Middle Distance Runner have paved the way for new artists in the same vein like 1985 and Fellow Bohemian. There’s only two more episodes of Shameless left this season after this, and we can’t wait to hear what other great tunes will show up.

You can always count on Shameless to come through with a good episode full of great tunes, and last week’s episode “Frank the Plumber” was no exception.  The episode features three songs we thought were particularly noteworthy, with slick uses of tunes from Murder By Death, The Left Hands, and The Acorn.

Murder By Death’s “Brother,” a Johnny Cash-like piece of americana, plays when Sheila goes to Karen’s room to apologize for being a crazy mother.  The slick indie pop jam “Run With A Knife” by The Left Hands plays when Jimmy finally receives his paycheck and he gets freaked out after seeing how little is left after the deductions. Last, but not least, The Acorn’s “Bobcat Goldwraith” plays when Fiona is asked to stay on at World Wide Cup because she has been doing so well.

Season 3 of Shameless has had the tough task of living up to the first two nearly-flawless seasons, and somehow it has managed to possibly even exceed our expectations. Last week’s episode, “Where There’s a Will” shows the Gallagher clan in a seemingly impossible fight to keep their house, and of course, results in some creative, shady tactics that left us wondering whether to laugh or cry.

We have long lauded this show for it’s ability to consistently pick the perfect music for different scenes, and of course this episode was no different. Of particular note was the song “Keep It Coming” by indie popsters Letters, which plays when Frank looks around Christopher’s apartment after moving in. At first he is freaked out by all the stuffed animals, until he gets distracted by a meatball sub, and the song’s playfulness fits right in to this light moment.

Last week’s episode of Shameless, “A Long Way From Home,” was centered around a custody battle in court in which Fiona attempts to take control of her life with the kids, and it also featured two great uses of songs - one from French-via-New York songstress Sydney Wayser, and another from scrappy indie stalwarts Middle Distance Runner.

“Potions” by Sydney Wayser plays while Frank goes to The Alibi to have a few drinks to calm his nerves before going to family court.

Near the end, “The Fury” by Middle Distance Runner plays and *SPOILER ALERT* this song plays when Fiona wins the custody of her siblings and they all are happy and celebrate, with the exception of the visibly shocked Jimmy.

Last week’s Shameless episode, “The Sins of My Caretaker” saw Frank in desperation mode trying to dig up Aunt Ginger’s remains when he is given notice by the city that they are going to work on the sewer main. As if that wasn’t already enough of a problem, things get worse as Frank breaks a sewage line, and during all the madness of this scene our ears were also treated to the frantic garage rock sounds of The Teeth.

Their raucous song “Your Feelings on Life” was the song chosen, and like the rest of their discography it has an energetic immediacy to it that all the best garage punk bands have had over the years.

We’ve said it many times, but Shameless is by far our favorite show out right now. What other show boasts the same perfect balance of drama, comedy, strong characters, and of course, great music use?

There are countless new, exciting bands that Shameless has introduced us to, and in last week’s episode, “May I Trim Your Hedges?” we learned of another, with newly-formed supergroup Holy Fever.  The band features Suicide File frontman Dave Weinberg (lead vocals), Malbec’s Samantha Barbera (bass and vocals), Give Up The Ghost’s (American Nightmare) Brian Masek (guitar), Neeraj Kane (guitar) of Hope Conspiracy and Suicide File, and The Explosion’s Andrew Black (drums) - with all that star power we’re kind of embarrassed to say we hadn’t heard of this project before.

Holy Fever’s song “Guided Missiles, Misguided Men” plays while Ian and Micky are working at Kash & Grab and a teen comes in and realizes that Micky is selling drugs on the side.

Shameless is baaaack! Our favorite new show from last year has finally returned, and judging by the many promos (we’ve watched them all countless times) and the first couple of episodes, this season is going to end up even better than the first. Beyond the fact that Shameless is not only the best drama show but also the best comedy out right now, it also has consistently used awesome music.

One great example of this is the new Fiona-centric promo that features “Kids” by Sleigh Bells, a perfectly edgy song that compliments her character so well. Emmy Rossum is primed to become one of the next breakout stars, and we can’t be happier - if you aren’t watching Shameless (or listening to Sleigh Bells) yet, we’d suggest making that a top priority.

The first season of Shameless is coming to an end, and this makes us quite sad, as it has quickly become one of our favorite shows. With a perfect blend of drama, comedy and outlandish moments, coupled with consistently stellar use of music, it’s safe to say that we’re hooked.

Last week’s episode, “Daddyz Girl” was another winner, and of course it also featured a great song, “Where Was My Brain” by Ted Leo.

We’ve made no secret that we’re fans of both Shameless and Tokyo Police Club, so we’re happy that they seem to like each other as well, since Tokyo Police Club’s music has been featured often in the first season. Last week’s episode (“But At Last Came a Knock”) found another opportunity to use “Breakneck Speed,” which ironically played while Lip and Karen are having sex in the van outside the house.
