Judd Appatow and his friends have been responsible for probably half of the great comedies of the past decade, and after finally seeing The Five Year Engagement this weekend, we can safely say they’ve done it again. Starring long-time Appatow parter-in-crime Jason Segel and Emily Blunt, the movie does a great job putting it’s characters into escalating ridiculous situations. Alison Brie and Chris Pratt might even steal the show from the main romance by playing their own hilarious couple, but that’s about all we’ll give for a movie spoilers…

As for music, Appatow has long had a history of great song choices and this movie is no exception. Besides a hilarious re-working of “We Didn’t Start the Fire” that Chris Pratt sings making fun of Tom’s (Segel) past lovers, there was also a great use of long-time Scene On TV favorites, Tokyo Police Club - their song “End of a Spark” was used when Violet (Blunt) is at the bar hanging out with her co-workers on a night she is upset with Tom.

Tokyo Police Club have honed an instantly recognizable sound, and it has lead to a stream of great use - some recent examples include Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2, Shameless, and the YP.com ads. Courteney Cox and co have made for some entertaining dramedy on Cougar Town, and in this past week’s episode, the show used “Wait Up (Boots of Danger)” to soundtrack a hilarious scene, as the guys wake up to go golfing, and then end up crashing the cart into the pond.

Want to place a bet on the next breakthrough act from Los Angeles? We say it’s a toss up between HANDS and Shapes of Race Cars. While HANDS is getting some buzz opening for big acts like Devotchka and selling out local shows, Shapes of Race Cars have been building a lot of momentum on the TV scene, which of course where our coverage comes in.

At the end of last year, “World’s End” was featured in Gossip Girl, introducing the band’s original blend of raw indie rock, glam, power-pop and more to the world. Now, we just saw a new Sobe commercial on MTV featuring “Right Now,” another sparkling track off their latest LP, Beauty Beat, a fantastic start-to-finish album for fans of Tokyo Police Club, T-Rex, Middle Distance Runner and The Strokes. Go ahead, jump on this bandwagon now. You’ll be bragging to your friends soon that you were first.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, the sequel to Jeff Kinney’s hilarious book Diary of a Wimpy Kid has now also been re-made as a film starring Zachary Gordon, and we were able to catch it over the weekend. While it may not quite live up to the near-flawless source material, the movie did a great job capturing the overall essence of the book, and Zachary Gordon gives a really solid performance as poor Gregg Heffley.

As for music, we though it was a great touch in the first movie to have Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” as the song that is sung to when the kids audition for The Wizard of Oz, but we were even happier to hear a few great modern songs in the sequel.

“Got Me the Beat” by Roge plays at the skating rink when Greg and Rowley run into Fregley. This smooth, yet hard-hitting dance jam perfectly balances the technicolor vibe of rave music, with the casual cool of a club (or skating rink!) on a Saturday night.

“School Daze” by Jet Stream appropriately plays when Greg decides to make his way over to Holly so he can ask her to skate, while his mom performs an embarrassing dance, reminiscing about her younger days. Featuring ex-No Doubt member Stephen Bradley, Jet Stream is another band that fits perfectly on the dance floor.

Finally, breaking away from the rink, Boots of Danger (Wait Up) by our long-time favorites Tokyo Police Club plays when Rodrick’s party is in full swing and Greg and Rowley make their way into chaos.

Awhile back, a reader tipped us off to “Tokyo Police Club’s End of a Spark” being used in a YP.com ad. Flash forward to today, and it seems as if the good folks at YP.com / AT & T were smart enough to realize when they had stumbled upon a good thing, as a new commercial has just been released that once again features “End of a Spark.” Witness the evidence above!

We’ve made no secret that we’re fans of both Shameless and Tokyo Police Club, so we’re happy that they seem to like each other as well, since Tokyo Police Club’s music has been featured often in the first season. Last week’s episode (“But At Last Came a Knock”) found another opportunity to use “Breakneck Speed,” which ironically played while Lip and Karen are having sex in the van outside the house.

For anyone who has followed this blog, Tokyo Police Club needs no introduction - we love them, and have covered them quite a lot, because music supervisors seem to love them, too. However, this past week’s episode of Shameless may have had the first use of “Breakneck Speed” in a TV show (or at least the first one we caught), and it played during quite a hilarious/sad scene, where Frank asks Sheila to help him deal with his sobriety, by entertaining him, and Sheila promptly breaks out into what we will be kind enough to call a ‘dance.’

MTV’s Skins may be the most publicized new US-remake of a classic British show, but don’t sleep on Shameless, which has four strong episodes out already.

Though we haven’t seen the original British version, Showtime’s take on it has been riveting TV in the four episodes that have aired so far, and we highly recommend you all check out this smart, funny new show. Beyond the show’s wit, and willingness on the part of its all attractive cast to show some skin, it also earned brownie points around this neck of the woods by ending Sunday night’s episode, “Casey Casden” with Tokyo Police Club’s “Wait Up (Boots of Danger).” Check out the clip above and if you haven’t done so already, check out the show.

Can you believe it’s only been a year since Jersey Shore first brought the guido/guidette culture to TV’s everywhere? In the short time since the first episode, Jersey Shore has taken the nation by storm, with “The Situation” and “Snooki” becoming cult-icons.

Well, the third season has just kicked off, and in “Back to the Shore” we are introduced to a new character, Deena Cortese, a friend of Snooki’s. Not to be outdone by her household name friend, Deena ended up ‘accidentally’ showing Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino a little bit more than her bikini line. Check out the video clip above to see exactly how it went down…and while you’re at it, enjoy the sweet sounds of Tokyo Police Club, as their tasty track “Bambi” plays right at the beginning of this already notorious scene. “Bambi” is a track that expands on the group’s infectious guitar-based sound, and has hints of the psychedelic synth sound of MGMT and the double-delay tones of Vampire Weekend.
